There is a need for increasing and managing experimental data on contemporary English, particularly as spoken in the upper Midwest. Moreover, there is need for a facility accessible to faculty and students for the investigation and teaching of contemporary English on the far eastern edge of UW-Madison campus.
The laboratory overseen by the English Languages and Linguistics subunit of the Department of English has as its goal the investigation of vernacular and conversational modern English in all its forms, including phonetic and whole body gesture, acoustics, syntax and discourse features. As such, it satisfies both conceptual and physical needs.
