Transcription Codes

An important thing to do while transcribing is to transcribe everything that you hear, because the aligner will try to align words where there is actually just noise. The special codes are:

sp – small pause

{LG} – laughing

{LS} -lip smack

{NS} – any noise

{BR} – breathing

{CG} – coughing

Other Notes

When writing words, do not include a dash. So “truck-driver” would not align, but “truck driver” would. If you have compounds, it’s good to separate their words. And “:” and “;” should be omitted from transcriptions.

Spell out all numbers/numeric values without hyphens:

twenty four

nineteen hundred and sixty six

two thousand and forty five

Acronyms need to be transribed as letter space letter space:

U W

N I H

Cut-offs mid word should reflect the sounds produced with a hyphen to indicate the production is incomplete:

wha- what did he say?

Tha- that is not fair!
